Nationally touring exhibition Picasso and the Progressive Proof organized by Townsend Art Advisory

Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocut Prints from a Private Collection, 2023-2027

  • Elmhurst Art Museum September 2023

The exhibition focusses on a critical moment in Picasso’s late printmaking, specifically his work with linoleum block prints or linocuts, of which he produced around 200 in the last twelve years of his life. Broad themes which engaged Picasso throughout his life and seen here include Picasso’s own competition with the Old Masters; his Spanish heritage as reflected in the bullfight; and his interest in mythology and the Classical past. The national tour opened at the Elmhurst Art Museum in the Chicago area and was on view from 9 September 2023 to 7 January 2024. Part of the museum’s observance of the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death in 1973, PIcasso: Fifty Years Later, it was accompanied by two other exhibitions, the Allen Collection of European Modernism and contemporary artists in dialogue with Picasso, including Jose Lerma, Liz Flores and Leasho Johnson.
